Todd Carmichael

Todd Carmichael (born August 30, 1963) is an American entrepreneur, adventure traveler, philanthropist, television personality, author, inventor, and producer.
Carmichael is the co-founder and sourcer for Philadelphia, PA-based La Colombe Torrefaction, one of the world’s premier coffee roasters and boutique cafes. He is the first American to make a solo trek across Antarctica to the South Pole, on foot with no assistance, capturing the World Speed Record with a total travel time of 39 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes.〔http://www.worldrecordacademy.com/travel/fastest_journey_to_the_South_Pole-world_record_set_by_Todd_Carmichael_80486.htm〕 He recorded footage of his near-death experience on video, which later became an award-winning documentary entitled ''Race to the Bottom of the Earth'' (2010) that was aired on the National Geographic Channel.〔http://racetothebottomoftheearth.com〕 With his World Record accomplishment, he also raised more than $250,000 for one of his numerous philanthropic projects, Orangutan Foundation International.〔http://www.esquire.com/features/americans-2011/todd-carmichael-1211〕
Todd Carmichael has been awarded the honor of being named ''Esquire Magazine''’s “American of the Year” and ''Philadelphia Magazine''’s “Person of the Year” in 2011. He is currently the host of Travel Channel’s ''Dangerous Grounds'', where his globetrotting adventures in search of the finest coffees in the world are captured on video and brought into millions of living rooms around the world.〔http://www.subzerosolo.com/2012/08/travel-channel-tv-show-dangerous-grounds/〕 In conjunction with The Clinton Foundation, Carmichael is one of the co-founders of the Haiti Coffee Academy, an institution created to help with the revitalization of the impoverished country’s once prominent coffee industry. In 2014, he entered the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Barista Guild of America’s U.S. Brewers Cup competition for the first time, and surprised his many critics by winning the Northeast Regionals with a “full immersion - double suspended filtration” method. He also placed runner-up at the national competition in Seattle, WA, where he unveiled and used the prototype of his experimental brewing contraption, dubbed “The Dragon.”〔http://thedragonbrewer.com/〕 It is a manual coffee-brewing device that he invented, integrating the pour-over concept with elements of the classic siphon. That same year, ''Food Republic'' ranked him #1 in its “Coffee Power Ranking.”〔http://www.foodrepublic.com/2014/01/30/food-republic-coffee-power-rankings〕
==Early life, education, and early career==
Todd Carmichael was born on August 30, 1963 in a working-class neighborhood just outside of Spokane, WA. He and his three sisters grew up on a farm, and were raised by their single mother. As a child, he would explore the region around his home, and at the age of 11, he began hiking its hills. He started doing distance running in his early teens, and demonstrated a natural athleticism for the sport. Carmichael completed his first marathon at age 15. His mother eventually moved the family to Spokane’s South Hill so that he could attend Ferris High School, which was home, at the time, to the region’s best cross-country team. From 1981 - 1982, he was part of Ferris’ state championship squad. He graduated from the high school in 1982, and received a distance running scholarship to the University of Washington, where he studied business and then later went on to work in accounting - international tax law - for Ernst & Young. He also ran his first ultramarathon at age 20.〔http://www.inlander.com/spokane/wasteland/Content?oid=2131441〕
While at college in Seattle, Todd Carmichael started working in the warehouse of Starbucks, an upstart at the time, and he began to explore his lifelong passion for coffee. The Emerald City is also where he met his longtime friend and future business partner, La Colombe co-founder Jean Philippe Iberti, who goes by the name JP, circa 1985. The two bonded at a grungy dive bar over a discussion about coffee, and started cooking together during the evenings, where they would have long discussions about their dreams of someday owning a coffee company. Both the men had a great appreciation for the skills of European coffee roasters and the ever-evolving fine cuisine in America.
